Hello there!
Every week I talk to Amazon sellers who say the same thing:
āI tried using ChatGPT⦠but the output wasnāt great.ā
And every time, the reason is the same:
Itās not the AI thatās the problem ā itās how youāre using it.
Weak ChatGPT results come from unclear prompts, missing context, or expecting AI to think like a seller.
Today, I want to show you the most common mistakes sellers make with ChatGPT ā and how to fix them instantly.
Letās get into it. š
ā Mistake #1: Expecting ChatGPT to āGuessā
Most sellers type something vague like:
āWrite me Amazon bullet points for my product.ā
And then theyāre disappointed when the output sounds generic.
ā Fix: Give Context, Not Commands
ChatGPT performs at the level of detail you give it.
Better prompt:
āAct as an Amazon listing specialist. Write 5 bullet points for a BPA-free collapsible water bottle. Target eco-conscious hikers. Keep the tone minimal and benefit-focused. Highlight portability, durability, and environmental impact.ā
ā Mistake #2: Asking for Final Copy Instead of Iterating
Sellers often try to get the perfect output in one shot.
But the best results come from back-and-forth shaping, exactly like briefing a human copywriter.
ā Fix: Use a 3-step workflow
First draft: āWrite a rough version focusing on X.ā
Refinement: āRewrite this with more benefit-driven language.ā
Optimization: āMake this compliant, scannable, and under 250 characters.ā
ā Mistake #3: Not Feeding ChatGPT Your Existing Branding
Many sellers forget to include:
Brand voice
Value prop
Differentiators
Competitor weaknesses
So ChatGPT writes in āAmazon style,ā which feels robotic.
ā Fix: Train ChatGPT on your voice
Prompt:
āHere are two examples of my brand voice. Learn the tone and rewrite my product description with the same style.ā
This gives you brand-consistent content instead of generic filler.
ā Mistake #4: Using ChatGPT for SEO Without Guardrails
If you say āadd keywords,ā ChatGPT sometimes over-optimizes and produces keyword stuffing that Amazon hates.
ā Fix: Give SEO constraints
Prompt:
āInsert secondary keywords naturally. Do not repeat keywords. Do not over-optimize. Keep the copy human and compliant with Amazon style guidelines.ā
This keeps your listing both readable and indexable.
ā Mistake #5: Not Asking for Multiple Versions
Getting just one version of anything (title, bullets, description) limits your ability to test.
ā Fix: Always request variations
Prompt:
āGive me 3 versions of this bullet point:
ā One emotional
ā One premium
ā One short and punchyā
Your best copy is usually version #2 or #3 ā not the first draft.
Final Thoughts
The sellers who complain that ChatGPT ādoesnāt workā all have one thing in common:
They expect magic from a one-sentence prompt.
But the sellers who win ā the ones writing clear, strategic, high-converting Amazon copy ā do these things consistently:
š They give context.
š They iterate.
š They feed the model data.
š They match brand voice.
š They use variations.
If you fix these mistakes, your results with AI wonāt just improve ā theyāll transform.
